The Sudanese landscape is full of ancient monuments, many of which rival those of Egypt, Sudan’s northern neighbour. Principal among these archaeological sites are the hundreds royal pyramids, many of which are located at one of Sudan’s two UNESCO World Heritage Sites at MEROE – which is only a short car journey from Khartoum. Other easily-accessible sites of interest for visitors are the sites of MUSAWWARAT ES-SUFRA and NAQA, which are monumental religious centres containing sandstone temples covered in remarkable ancient inscriptions.
